Syria. Ukraine. Iran?

It is no secret that in 2013 major things were going on in Syria, whether the United States news sources were giving us a full view of what was going on, is a different story. The same can be said with the issues going on in the Ukraine recently, the U.S. covers what it wants to cover when it comes to news. With the annexation of the Crimean peninsula as of just yesterday, the Ukraine may be out of the news for just a single moment. In that moment there has been talk of another possible major world news story. Israel is considering a possible military strike on Iran, despite what the United States says or feels about it. Israel plans to attack Iran solo if that's the way it has to be.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have ordered the army to continue preparing for a possible military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities at a cost of at least 10 billion shekels ($2.89 billion) this year, despite the talks between Iran and the West, according to recent statements by senior military officers.”

Would the average American News watcher/reader have heard about this? When searching for this topic there were dozens of articles but none posted by any "major" U.S. news source. It will be tough for U.S. news outlets to ignore this topic completely, but the real question is what kind of spin will they put on this?  An ally of the U.S. planning a strike with out the U.S.'s approval, they'll have to think of something. Is the U.S. government going to be tied to yet another crisis/war? I suppose we will have to wait and see how news sources will deliver this news.

Fukushima without the freak out

Has the Fukushima nuclear disaster happened so long ago that everyone has forgotten about it and the possible affects it may have on the United States. In my opinion if today's Californians knew about radiation hitting their coast there would be a little bit of a freak out, yet no one seems to care. But the question is do people not care or do they not know.

Fukushima workers are rumored to have been seen using duct tape to fix problems in their plant, but is this what lead to the nuclear disaster in the first place? Neither the United States nor Japanese government acknowledge these rumors and are quoted saying they don't mean anything. This issue goes past just not acknowledging it but it seems as if people may be actually trying to cover it up with the most ridiculous theory I have seen in a while. Red painted utensils are the supposed cause to the radiation spike on the west coast. I am guessing those red painted utensils are the cause of mutated wildlife on the same coast...

The concern for radiation spikes in the United States from this disaster have gone somewhat silent since 2011 but back in 2011 scientists stated that the radiation amount hitting the US would only increase. So why the decrease in concern?

The cover up continues with the Japanese government assuring citizens that the Fukushima plant is perfectly safe yet at the same time quietly conducting a study that showed more than 75% of toxic waste dumped into the Pacific Ocean in recent years has come from this plant. While the US government has the opportunity to expose these possibilities of unethical toxic waste management they take millions to purchase chemicals to attempt to solve the problem.

The walking dead is just a popular tv show now but what happens when Fukushima has another nuclear disaster from poor toxic waste management and people actually look like this...

To be or not to be ? The Crimean Question.

Thousands of Ukranians have taken over the streets protesting for their government to align with the West in particular the European Union, instead of Russia. These protests heightened after president Viktor Yanukovych abandoned deal with closer ties with the European Union in favor of closer collaboration with Russia.

Most developments apply to the Crimean peninsula because of their Russian majority. Due to such unrest, on March 1st the Russian parliament approved President Putin's request to involve Russian forces in Ukraine. This had led to a referendum which allows Crimea to secede and join Russia.

As violence increased in Ukraine because of difference in ideologies, Russia sent in troops because it was their duty to protect their "fellow compatriots."

A lot of what is happening with this problem is not fully shown to the American public, reason being could be the 10 plus years of war over the Middle East which has led the low support of the American people and involving ourselves with another country. Recently a little more has been shown to the American public as President Barack Obama has made it a more prevalent issue, but it is still not receiving nearly enough attention. The country continues to be filled with fluff news about celebrities and getting kicked out of rehab rather than talking about actual news.

On March 16th the vote for the annexation of Crimea was taking place. But almost everyone was unaware of this.

On March 16th Miley Cyrus got a tattoo. This picture was sent,  Instagrammed, and retweeted over a few thousand times.
We live in a country where a picture of a tattoo receives more attention than the complete revolution of a country. This could be because our interest of what is happening outside of our country are not as important.

American news networks play soft ball the hard hitting Syrian War!

Since March of 2011, Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime has been fighting a war against its own civilians, which has resulted in the killing of over 70,000 people, and the displacement of 9 million more into refugee camps over the last three years.

As Syrians both inside the country and living in camps now head into what looks the next of many more years of war to come, their story in American media remains devoid of clarity and far from the reality they
must endure each day.

That is three years into the Syrian War and Americans still remain only vaguely aware of Assad’s genocidal war crimes, political ties to P5 countries like Russia and China (and Iran), the trading of weapons, illegal demolition of entire neighborhoods, and the inhumane living conditions they continue to suffer.
Before (left) and after pictures show that the al-Assad regime destroyed entire civilian neighborhoods, killing many women and children in just a few days (CNN/HRW)
Syrian neighborhood blasted with dynamite by government - Human Rights Watch (2014) Razed to the Ground

But instead of getting a clearer picture of what lies ahead for civilians in the Syrian War or the frustrated efforts of international negotiations, Americans get a single story from CNN about girls in refugee camps learning to play soccer while sporting FIFA shirts no less!

A group of young girls wearing one of the FIFA shirts enjoy kicking a ball.

Though it's not a story about FIFA's work that is difficult to tolerate but that news giants failed to report that on the same day (March 15, 2014) the Syrian government failed yet again to meet deadlines 'mandated' by the United States to destroy their stockpiles of chemical weapons.

1,300 killed in chemical attack on Ghouta region
August 2013 - http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2013/08/21

Therefore, a comparative look at the reality of the situation makes it clear that it is not FIFA we should be concerned with, but the repeated failures on the part of international negotiators to hold Assad's regime accountable for not only the blatantly using chemical weapons to kill civilians, but for allowing Syria to maintain control and possession over ACTUAL weapons of mass destruction.

Ignored Unrest in Turkey

Turmoil has been growing very quickly in Eastern Europe. Last week a young boy named Berkin Elvan died after months in a coma. Last summer this boy was simply walking to the store to buy bread and  was struck in the head by a tear gas canister which was hastily shot by riot police in Turkey. The funeral which followed was massive, with thousands marching in his honor.

Unfortunately this massive event in honor of Berkin turned violent as riot police arrived and shot tear gas and fired water cannons at the crowd.

These protests clearly have global implications. With the growing unrest also being felt in Ukraine, along with the invasion from Russia, one would think these Turkish protests would be major news across the world. Unfortunately, none of the major US news stations have had adequate coverage of these events. Instead this news story about the TV show LOST which stopped airing in May 2010 is on the front page of CBS' site.
At least the American people can learn about how Ben Linus interprets his character. Fortunately when I looked up Turkey on the front page of ABC news' website, something came up.

I've asked relatives and peers if they had heard of the events in Turkey, and of course nearly nobody had heard about it. Perhaps showing the American population the troubles that are facing Eastern Europe would not be beneficial to advertisers. With Turkey being so close Ukraine, it's very possible Russia could make a move there as well considering their political instability. This is obviously speculation, but isn't this something that should be talked about among the American people? We should be informed of these global events, not of a kitten eating food.
